Use the result to decide what to improve first
DERA organizes owner-reported readiness across seven dimensions and returns exactly three prioritized next actions without an overall numerical score or recommendation prediction. The assessment is intended to organize the next work, not award a badge. I want an owner to understand the reasons behind the result and choose a manageable first response. That is why the evidence label and the limits belong beside the guidance.
“It is not built to grade you. It is built to help you decide what to fix first.”
— Curtiss Witt, The Decision Economy, Chapter 17.
What decision does DERA help me make?
The Decision Economy Readiness Assessment helps an owner prioritize work for one main offer using reported conditions across seven dimensions. It returns a descriptive result and three starting actions. It is orientation for improvement, not a verdict on the overall quality or future success of the business. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
Answer with one main offer and relevant audience in mind. Mixing several different services can make an answer unclear because a condition may be true for one and false for another. A bounded scope makes the result easier to interpret and the resulting actions easier to assign.
DERA uses the answers the owner provides. It does not independently inspect the business while the questionnaire is completed. The result’s BY YOUR ACCOUNT label states that basis and should remain visible when the plan is discussed or used to guide further work. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
The V1 bank contains 27 questions, with applicability rules affecting what is relevant. Do not assume every user must encounter or answer every bank item. The important point is how the current applicable information is interpreted, including what remains unknown or outside scope. (Witt, supplied author source set, September 2026)
DERA does not turn the seven dimensions into a single readiness percentage. A descriptive profile fits its orientation role without implying a calibrated probability of recommendation. Any summary that adds an overall score changes the approved meaning rather than simply presenting it more conveniently. (Witt, supplied author source set, September 2026)
The comparison below describes two approaches to the work. It is a practical design contrast, not a measured claim that one approach always produces a better commercial outcome.
| Information and activity approach | Decision-support approach |
|---|---|
| Look for a single readiness score. | Read the descriptive dimensions and their reasons. |
| Present self-report as an audit. | Keep BY YOUR ACCOUNT attached. |
| Treat three actions as a complete transformation. | Use them as ordered starting work. |
How should I read the first five dimensions?
This dimension asks about conditions that help a customer understand what the business provides and when it fits. A clear name alone is not enough. The owner should consider the public explanation of the offer, audience, and important conditions rather than assume existing familiarity supplies that meaning.
This dimension concerns whether important statements have useful, inspectable support. It does not independently authenticate that support during the assessment. Report the current condition carefully, and keep the distinction between having evidence, understanding its scope, and having a claim verified by another party.
This dimension asks whether the business helps the customer work through a choice rather than only describing itself. A resource can clarify options, trade-offs, or the next step. Its usefulness is different from whether the resource is visually polished or whether every visitor becomes a lead.
This dimension considers whether people can reach and use the information or capability, with relevant machine access where applicable. It remains separate from usefulness. A reachable tool can still be unhelpful, and a useful mechanism can still be blocked by an access problem.
This dimension considers conditions such as clear boundaries, interests, and information handling. It is not a certification that the business is trustworthy in every respect. The result should help identify reported practices for review without turning the dimension’s name into an unrestricted endorsement.
What else appears in the result?
A useful answer should make an appropriate next action understandable, including what it commits the person to. The owner should distinguish an information request from a confirmed service or purchase. Clear action meaning helps both humans and authorized agents avoid guessing about consequences.
Views, completed help, decision feedback, and actual AI use are different observations. This dimension encourages the owner to distinguish them. It does not automatically install measurement or establish business impact simply because the owner reports that some activity is being tracked.
The approved statuses are Needs checking, Needs attention, Partly in place, and In place by your account. Read them as descriptions under the model, not numerical grades. The last phrase retains the evidence basis; removing it would make the status appear stronger than the assessment supports. (Witt, supplied author source set, September 2026)
An owner who is unsure has not necessarily reported that a condition is absent. DERA preserves that distinction rather than treating uncertainty as a favorable answer or an automatic failure. Review the result’s explanation of missing information before deciding which condition needs investigation or correction. (Witt, supplied author source set, September 2026)
The result returns exactly three ordered action cards. They provide a practical place to begin, not a complete transformation plan. Use the reasoning attached to the actions to understand why they were selected and what condition each one is intended to improve. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
The working rule I return to is this: “It is not built to grade you. It is built to help you decide what to fix first.” It is a way to judge the next piece of work, while keeping its evidence and limitations visible.
What does the assessment not establish?
DERA does not crawl your site or independently inspect public pages as part of the current self-report assessment. An owner can use the result to identify what deserves checking, but should not describe the completed questionnaire as evidence that those checks have already occurred. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
The assessment does not calculate whether ChatGPT or another system will recommend the business. Its model organizes readiness conditions, not a calibrated selection probability. Clearer facts and useful tools may be worthwhile improvements without creating a guaranteed outcome in an external AI response. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
A descriptive status is not a license, accreditation, or independent quality verdict. Keep the result tied to the reported offer and conditions. A business should not display a positive status as though the Institute has verified all aspects of its services or endorsed every claim.
The assessment can identify starting work, but it does not complete that work for the owner. Assign responsibility and define a completion check for each action. Keep the recommendation, the implementation, and the evidence of its effect as distinct parts of the improvement process.
Observed Publicly, Technically Tested, and Behaviorally Observed describe additional kinds of evidence. They are not live layers silently applied to the current result. A user who wants a deeper check should understand what would need to be observed or tested and within what scope. Decision Economy Institute: live capability manifest; accessed September 2026
How should I use the complete result?
Do not reduce the result to the most favorable or least favorable label. Read the dimension explanations, unknowns, and selected actions as a connected orientation. The useful question is what work the result clarifies, not whether a single status can be used as a public badge.
Choose an owner, a concrete next step, and a way to confirm completion. The task should describe an observable change rather than a vague ambition. This turns the result into practical work while preserving the assessment’s limited role as a starting prioritization tool.
The full result comes before an optional plan-email request or help path. Email My Plan is separate from consent for research updates. A person should be able to benefit from the assessment without treating completion as permission for unrelated contact or commercial engagement.
An answer can become outdated when the offer or its supporting conditions change. Revisit the relevant information and inspect how the result changes. Repeating the assessment without any changed facts is not the same as adding independent evidence or demonstrating that an improvement has succeeded.
DERA is useful when the owner leaves knowing what to check or improve first and why. It does not need an overall score or a recommendation guarantee to perform that role. Treat the plan as a practical starting point, then establish the evidence needed for any stronger conclusion.
What can I do with this today?
Start with one offer and write down the next decision this article helps you examine. Give the work a defined scope before adding a new page, tool or integration.
1. Know what information the assessment can and cannot supply.
2. Identify the consequential fact or condition that remains uncertain. Name who can check it and what would establish completion.
3. If you need help ordering the business work, complete the free Decision Economy Readiness Assessment. Read its reasons and three starting actions, then choose the first task you can inspect.
Our own example is deliberately bounded. The Institute’s Method explains the owner-reported result; its capability manifest declares what the tool can do; and its assessment schema makes the question bank and data contract inspectable. These September 2026 publisher documents describe the assessment. They do not independently establish better customer or business outcomes.
Use the result to decide what to improve first
Before the next customer faces the same unresolved choice, identify the improvement that would make the answer more useful. Use the readiness assessment to turn your reported conditions into three starting actions, and keep the next evidence check in view.

FAQ
Why keep one offer in scope?
Answer with one main offer and relevant audience in mind. Mixing several different services can make an answer unclear because a condition may be true for one and false for another. A bounded scope makes the result easier to interpret and the resulting actions easier to assign.
What does Useful examine?
This dimension asks whether the business helps the customer work through a choice rather than only describing itself. A resource can clarify options, trade-offs, or the next step. Its usefulness is different from whether the resource is visually polished or whether every visitor becomes a lead.
What does Measurable examine?
Views, completed help, decision feedback, and actual AI use are different observations. This dimension encourages the owner to distinguish them. It does not automatically install measurement or establish business impact simply because the owner reports that some activity is being tracked.
Does it perform the improvements?
The assessment can identify starting work, but it does not complete that work for the owner. Assign responsibility and define a completion check for each action. Keep the recommendation, the implementation, and the evidence of its effect as distinct parts of the improvement process.
When should I revisit the result?
An answer can become outdated when the offer or its supporting conditions change. Revisit the relevant information and inspect how the result changes. Repeating the assessment without any changed facts is not the same as adding independent evidence or demonstrating that an improvement has succeeded.
Do I need to share contact details before seeing the assessment result?
No. The complete result is available before an optional email request. If a contact commitment has held you back, try the free readiness assessment and read the plan first. Emailing it and consenting to future updates are separate choices. The result remains BY YOUR ACCOUNT.
